Profile

Art is one of those pathways that we can venture upon at any time in our lives.  My own journey began some 20 + years ago and it has been a fascinating journey of discovery, not only of the dievse techniques of painting itself - drawing, watercolour, acrylics, oils - and seeing the world of colour from a different perspective, rather than that of chromotherapy, but also discovery of oneself. It turns out that the things that are truly important are really quite simple and the satisfaction that they give is immeasurable.

Painting as a form of expression is a hugely rewarding thing, and as one travels down the road one's aims are constantly changing so that what we set out  to achieve is always just "over the horizon". Perhaps it is this elusive quality that makes art such a satisfying activity. At the start I suppose our aims are mostly to depict things as they are or appear to us, but slowly that aim is eroded and the main concern becomes to express and evoke feelings using the physical reality as a jumping off point. The eye of the beholder then becomes increasingly important in a dance of mutual complicity.

Byzantine art has long been one of my passions, and iconography has become another part of my art world.  It is quite different from "free" painting because this ancient art form has its own canons and laws which should be adhered to if we are to remain faithful to the spirit of the sacred dimension of this art form which appeals to the depths of the soul.
